Can You Run ChatGPT on Your Own Server? Private AI for UK Businesses
15 October 2026 · By Ethan Fernandes
You can't install ChatGPT itself, but you can run a ChatGPT-style AI on your own server so client data never leaves your control. How private AI works, what it can do and who it's for.
Quick answer
You can't install ChatGPT itself, as it only runs on OpenAI's systems. But you can run capable open-weight AI models, including OpenAI's own gpt-oss models, on your own server or in a private UK cloud. Staff get a ChatGPT-style chat screen, and prompts and documents stay on systems you control.
"We'd love to use AI, but we can't put client data into ChatGPT." We hear this most from solicitors, accountants, healthcare and HR teams. The good news is that you no longer have to choose between AI and confidentiality. You can run your own.
The short version: ChatGPT itself only runs on OpenAI's systems, so you can't install it. But you can run capable open-weight AI models, including models OpenAI has released for exactly this, on your own server or in a private UK cloud. Staff get a ChatGPT-style chat screen, and prompts and documents stay on systems you control.
What "Private AI" Means
A private AI is an AI assistant that runs on hardware or a cloud environment dedicated to your business, instead of a shared public service. It's built from three parts:
- An open-weight model: an AI model whose files can be downloaded and run anywhere. Well-known families include Meta's Llama, Mistral, Google's Gemma, Qwen and OpenAI's own gpt-oss models.
- The machine it runs on: a powerful workstation or server in your office, or a private environment in a UK data centre.
- A chat interface: a familiar ChatGPT-style screen your staff sign in to with their normal work accounts.
Can It Work Without the Internet?
Yes. Once installed, a local model can run with no internet connection at all, which suits the most confidential work. You'll still want a secure, controlled way to install updates and new models.
Is It as Good as ChatGPT?
For many everyday business tasks, such as summarising documents, drafting from your templates and answering questions about your own files, modern open-weight models do a good job. The biggest public models are still stronger at the hardest reasoning tasks. That's why we always pilot on your real work before you commit, so you know what to expect.
What Can It Do?
- Answer questions from your own documents, such as contracts, procedures and case files, pointing to the source.
- Summarise and draft from your own templates and precedents.
- Transcribe and summarise meetings on your own hardware.
- Extract and redact details from invoices, forms and reports.
- Remember your business over time. Using the "LLM wiki" approach popularised by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, the AI keeps a growing set of linked pages about your clients, projects and procedures, so its knowledge builds up instead of being forgotten after each chat.
On-Premise or Private Cloud?
| On-premise server | Private UK cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Where data lives | In your building | Your own isolated environment in a UK data centre |
| Works offline | Yes | No |
| Hardware to house | Yes | No |
| Best for | The most sensitive data, steady usage | Multiple offices, remote teams, flexible capacity |
What About Security?
An AI server holds some of your most sensitive information, so it needs the same care as the rest of your IT: sign-in with multi-factor authentication, access limited by role, activity logging, patching, monitoring and backups. Check each model's licence allows business use, too.
Not every task needs private AI. Many businesses use a hybrid: private AI for confidential work, and an approved business tool like Microsoft 365 Copilot for everyday tasks. See is ChatGPT safe for business? and ChatGPT vs Copilot.

Common questions
Not ChatGPT itself, which only runs on OpenAI's systems. You can run open-weight models locally instead, including OpenAI's gpt-oss models, with a ChatGPT-style interface for staff.
Running an open-weight AI model on your own server, with no connection to a public AI service. For less sensitive work, business plans of Copilot or ChatGPT with data processing agreements are a reasonable middle ground.
You need more processing power than a normal office PC, usually a workstation or server with a powerful graphics card or plenty of memory. The right size depends on how many people use it and which models you need.
Yes. It can maintain a wiki of linked pages about your clients, projects and procedures, updated as new documents arrive, so its knowledge grows instead of being forgotten after each chat.
